Foods to Avoid to Prevent Migraine




Migraine is an extreme, painful headache that is frequently associated with nausea and vomiting. For others, migraine is accompanied by early sensory warning signals like seeing flashes of light and blind spots. It can be relieved by taking medications like pain reliever or medicines advised by doctors.

How can we able to prevent from suffering migraine? There are foods should be avoided to prevent migraine attack. This can help a lot to prevent or minimize from suffering severe headache cause by migraine.

The following are the foods to avoid for migraine sufferers.

Avoid foods high in tyramine.

Do not eat foods high in tyramine like processed meats, nuts, unpasteurized beer, pepperoni and salami, and cured meats like sausage. There are also certain fruits that can trigger migraine headache like bananas, avocados, raisins, raspberries and red plums. An overripe fruits may also cause migraine attack. Chocolates, red wine, teriyaki sauce, soy sauce and tomato are foods that are considered high in tyramine so should also be avoided by people with migraine.

Avoid beans.

There are some beans that can trigger the migraine attack like Italian beans, fermented bean curds, broad fava beans, Chinese pea pods, fermented soya beans, beans paste and soya bean paste.

Avoid cheese.

Avoid from eating cheese like mozzarella, blue cheese, brie, muenster, gorgonzola, feta, parmesan, stilton and processed cheese. If you are a cheese lover, you may use cottage cheese, Ricotta and cream cheese.

Avoid foods high in nitrite.

Foods that are high in nitrite can also cause migraine headache. Some of foods high in nitrite are cured meats like ham, bologna, corned beef, bacon, hot dog, luncheon meat, sausage and smoked salmon. There are also vegetables high in nitrite like lettuce, radish and spinach.

Avoid foods high in sulfite.

Sulfite are used as preservatives in some foods like dried fruits, canned vegetables, processed foods, pickled cocktail onions and grape juices. These foods should be avoided for it can also trigger migraine headache.

Avoid foods with aspartame.

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener found in beverages, sugar free foods and low calorie foods.

Avoid excessive intake of caffeine.

Too much intake of caffeine can also trigger migraine attack. Avoid drinking tea, soda, hot cocoa, coffee and chocolate where caffeine can be found.


It will be a great help to prevent migraine attack if all these foods can be avoided. Try to observe of the food you eat. Get rid of the food if migraine occurs after eating it. Avoidance of the particular food will be the most effective way to lessen the possibility of having migraine headache.
